Reviewer's Comments:  Bobby's Barbecue, halfway between Aiken and North Augusta, SC on the Highway 1, is the classic example of what not to do when you expand. Bobby's Barbecue was, for many years, some of the best you could find. He cooked with wood/gas, put out some excellent meats and sides, and had a large and loyal following. Then his pits caught fire and he decided to build himself a bigger, better place. When he did, he went with - shudder - electric ovens. The crap (excuse my language) he puts out now resembles more car tire than barbecue. The sauces are the same, but they cannot hide that hideous taste and texture. The sides are good - his slaw and potato salad are very good - and the place does have buffet service. The ribs are country style (what?????), and the only real saving grace is the sauced pork. It appears to be pulled, and with the addition of the sauce, is actually pretty good. All in all, if you're ever in the Aiken/Augusta area and are craving some good 'Q, avoid this place like the plague. On the other hand, if all you're looking to do is fill up, you can do that here for only $5.95.

Reviewer's Comments:  http://www.concentric.net/~Stwradio/vbbq.htm   Wood legs scrape the concrete floor as you reach across the table to open a fresh plastic pack of napkins. You've just flown into Stanton's BBQ between Gibson and the N.C. line and Bennettsville, South Carolina. This place is just about as famous as Buddy's Truck Stop, a controversial motel in Marlboro County, but the pork here is arguably the best in the land. Peppery, the barbecue is spicy, salty and best seasoned with more pepper and the great sauce they provide. A lot of my friends from Laurinburg, N.C. go, and many pilots fly in on the dirt strip outside the building where a large wall fan blows the scrumptious aroma into your face before the air conditioning hits you. Texas Tumbler glasses; strong, sweet tea. Good ketchup. And there ain't no beer here, podner. Family joint. No profanity, I think one sign says. I curse in excitement when I enter every time because as I write about it, my saliva glands secrete water, longing for the lean meat. The slaw is fabulous; sweet to eat and chopped mighty fine and small. The seafood can be cooked to order, and a friend of mine has them broil it each trip, and they don't seem to mind. Another friend of mine gets steamed when the hushpuppies are grabbed by other tablemates, but his anger is defused once the waitress notices our dilemma. The service is great - even when they're busier than an autumn squirrel in a nuclear winter. Local sites include St. Andrews Presbyterian College in Laurinburg with its pretty dogwoods, Jimmy's Drive-In in McColl, S.C. and Trucker's Motel in Marlboro County where the video poker is eating the Palmetto State alive.

Reviewer's Comments:  Typical Lexington style BBQ. The meat wasnt bad, but not much smoke flavor. The slaw we had was the BBQ Slaw. Fries were good and crisp, and the hushpuppies were good. This is a good place to stop if you need a q-refill along your drive up I-85 *unless you are going near Lexington, NC then save your appetite and stop there*

Reviewer's Comments:  A great place to stop on the way to Myrtle Beach, if you are going the back way on the old US 378, about 25 miles south of Florence. Just a small unpretentious block building with some ancient Oak trees near the takeout window. Delectable BBQ, no sauce around, probably added to the meat before serving. The cole slaw is a very good accompanyment to the meat. One thing to try on the buffet is the regional specialty called "Chicken Bog", chicken cooked with rice with an interesting flavor. The iced tea is typically southern, and the whole meal is embellished with pickles and light bread. Probably the best place I have ever eaten Q... A place not to be missed, its a little out of the way, but here 245 miles away, we've driven down there just for lunch.

I have eaten BBQ all over the south but never have I had BBQ this bad. When I first got my BBQ plate, I noticed a yellowish tinge to the meat. I suspected they used some kind of sauce to finish the meat when it was chopped. Close. Its a mustard based sauce "Maurice's Gourmet BBQ sauce". The meat is first smoked, then chopped and then the sauce is slow cooked into the meat.

My first reaction was that the meat was bad. I asked the waitress if I could get meat with no sauce - no - they don't have dry meat. Even the red sauce they serve is a mustard based sauce with what looks like red food coloring added - a sickly color of red.

After a few bites of the Q, I had as much as I could take. I next tried the "Hash" - they don't serve Brunswick Stew. The hash again seems to be based on the left over BBQ and has a mustard flavor. A very dissapointing meal. The meal did however improve when I sent the plate back and got the foot long chili dog and a basket of fries.

In my opinion, a good Q joint should serve the meat alone and give you the option of sauces. Slow cooking the sauce into the chopped meat could turn off alot of people.

Don't bother looking for decent BBQ in Columbia SC - I doubt you'll find it.

Great South Carolina BBQ in Orangeburg, SC on the edge of the low country. I had 2 BBQ sandwiches for $4 total, service was friendly and quick. Meat was great too. Traditional SC mustard based sauce. (Earl Duke's has been in business since 1955... must be good.) Best BBQ I've had outside Lexington, NC.

This is my favorite BBQ place. The meat is tender and cooked over hickory wood. The mustard-based sauce is unique and the best stuff on earth. There isn't better BBQ anywhere else.

This a great little buffet style place about 2 minutes off of I-26. Definitely worth the stop if you're going down I-26. It's an all you can eat buffet with pork only (the meat of choice in South Carolina). Sauce selection is either mustard or vinegar based. The mustard sauce is a bit sweeter than most. Added ingredient tasted like some honey. The vinegar sauce is milder than most. The meat options were chopped pork and ribs.

Porky D's is a carry out establishment, but picnic tables are outside if you can't wait until you get the food back home, which is very likely. The sauce is mustard base and the meat options are pork and chicken. The meat is cooked right outside over a wood fire. The food has some of the best flavor I've ever had. The portions are enormous and the prices are very reasonable.

This is by far the best barbecue joint I've tried in South Carolina. It's a little off the beaten path, but well worth the drive. It's a buffet style establishment serving only mustard sauce. The ribs and chopped pork have the best smoked flavor of anywhere. I've tried other buffet style places in South Carolina and this surpassed them all.

Best South Carolina BBQ anywhere in the state. Sauce is a vinegar base. This is a buffet style all you can eat restuarant. They have delicious home style vegetables and some of the best hush puppies I have ever eaten. I make the 60 or so mile drive from my home whenever possible to eat here. It is well worth the drive and you should not go away hungry.

Anyone can cook a Boston Butt at 200 degrees for 12 hours and put your favorite sauce over the meat, but these people have the art of making the most important ingredient------hash. The best I've eaten in years.

If you want the Best BBQ in South Carolina, go to Shealey's. Their buffet style bbq eatery is a palitable masterpiece of southern cuisine. Their mustard base BBQ is what they're famous for, but they have added a new red pepper and vinager bbq that will have your tongue dancing in joy. Their hash is second to none, and the vegetables are better than mama's. Put it all together with a wonderful salad bar and tasty dessert options, and you have the best reason to visit the small town of Batesburg-Leesville. Prices are great, just like the food.
