Danny Gaulden's Dairy Queen
902 S. Canal
Reviewer's Comments: This ain't just a burger joint. Danny Gaulden has
finest Dairy Queen anywhere. During two separate visits and trying both meat plates
and sandwhiches, all we can say is 'Fantastic BBQ', sides, and service. Instead of
detailing each separate menu item tasted, let the ratings speak for themselves. If
you are in the Carlsbad area, GO THERE!

I found Danny's Dairy Queen while surfing the net. I live in a town about an hour from Carlsbad, and had visited Carlsbad often. It never occured to me to stop at a DQ for BBQ. When I heard about this particular DQ on the net, I made it a point to stop in on my next visit. I should point out that I run a BBQ restaurant, so I'm pretty critical.
I placed my order to go. I ordered a dinner that included sausage and brisket, and also ordered a pound of sliced pork. The dinner was served with potato salad and beans, and I don't recall any other options being offered.
I went in at about 6:30 p.m. or so, and the place was packed. Still, even though the staff seemed a little wigged out, I recieved my order within 7 or 8 minutes.
When I got to my motel room, I opened up my packages, and they had not included pasticware in my order. While, I did not request it, in a tourist town such as Carlsbad, you would think they would include it, or at least ask if you needed it. After a call to room service for some silverware, I was on my way.
I must say, the brisket and the pork were top shelf. I try a lot of different places and have had none better. The sausage was good also, although, not that different from what you get at most Q joints. The sauce was kind of different, not exactly to my taste, but I welcome any sauce that is different from the oversweet stuff most places serve. Both the potato salad and the western beans were excelent, and that's pretty big praise from a guy who prefers more traditional baked beans.
All in all, I would go back again, and you should too, if your in the Carlsbad area! Danny really knows his stuff!

This is small chain BBQ restaurant out of Texas. I was a bit skeptical when I first visited this place because of the fake country atmosphere (paper towel dispensers for napkins, Coke carriers for trays, etc.), however the excellent food overcomes the put-on atmosphere. Rudy's has about 12 different varieties of BBQ and dishes it out by the pound, so all appetites are sure to be pleased. Sides include an outstanding Green Chile stew and very good Peach cobbler.
