Beale St. Barbecue
Water St, ME
Reviewer's Comments: Real slow cooked meat over lump charcoal. Great pulled pork.
Chicken and ribs are fantastic. Sauce won 2nd place at the Pig & Pepper in '97.
Brisket can be a little fatty and dry. The sides are inconsistent but very good. The chef
specials are very inventive and quite good. I have had excellent duck and salmon. The
staff is great. Good selection of microbrews.

Gray is a small town and if you can't follow your nose to this place then you're either looking on a day they're not smoking (currently Wednesday through Saturday) or you could find the McDonald's and look across the street. These very nice folks have other jobs but clearly enjoy Q. They have a heavy duty small home-made pit out front and a pile of oak on the grounds. They smoke one meat a day and serve it properly. One of the owners is from Texas, her family runs a BBQ catering operation and her husband has clearly done a lot of hands-on learning from his in-laws. The brisket was very tender and tasty. I did not try the ribs or pork on this trip but look forward to doing so next year. The slaw was good, finely chopped, not too wet. The potato salad very creamy, too creamy. The sweet tea just a little too sweet for me, more like a fruit drink than iced tea. Home made fries were good. The sauce is medium thin, red and pretty sweet. I liked it, my wife wasn't too impressed. But I'm reviewing way too critically! These are real nice folks doing a great job trying to get this Q-joint going, and the food is very satisfying. I think the pitmaster would do better to limit the smoke a bit, get down to that "thin blue" rather than thick grey, because the smoke ring on the brisket was a little narrow and the blackened crust a little off, but again, the taste was great and I admire what they're doing. Give it a try if you're in the Portland-Yarmouth area.
