The beans are excellent. Slaw is very good.  The one on AIA, about a mile North from 520 is decorated with pictures and testimonials by Astronauts.

Reviewr's Comments:  Let's start with the good stuff... The cole slaw was nice and crunchy, tangy yet sweet, I really liked it. The tater salad was good. It had large pieces of potatoes with the skin on, mustard, mayo and relish. I really like it also! The sauce left a lot to be desired. It was rather plain with I think Tabasco added for heat. Not too bad, but I expect more. On to the meat... I had ribs and chopped beef. The beef tasted mushy and soggy. I was reminded of eating pot roast that was about a week old with sauce added to it. The ribs left the destinct impression that they were boiled first. They too had a mushiness to them. The flavor was good however. The rub seemed to be salt, sugar, black pepper and maybe a few other spices. Not a bad place, but I expected more from what all the people I talked too told me about the place. I was tempted to go 3.0 but just couldnt bring myself to do it this time.

Reviewer's Comments: This is a chain joint that is all over the SE US. I did a previous review on one outside Atlanta, GA. For a chain, they have some dang good q. I had the all you can graze pork, fries, garlic bread and ice tea. The pork is sliced thin, good flavor, good texture! The fries were, well fries, but the garlic bread was outstanding. The service was great, the waitress was very helpfull and real quick. The sauce, well its pretty darn good sauce. I liked a mix of the hot and the smokey. If you need a q fix, this would be a good chain place to stop in at!

Its a pork q sandwich with beans and drink for about 5 bucks. Spent four days in Jacksonville area, visit Sonny's three times. Lots of good smokey aroma and taste too. The tenderness of the ribs may vary slightly from one restuarant to another, but overall very good. Also had chicken that was out of this world. Sonny's continues to be one of the main reasons we look forward to spending time in Florida.

Having been told that Tampa was a 'Q wasteland, I wasn't expecting too much. I was pleasantly surprised at what I found at Woody's. I had the sampler, which is some sliced pork, sliced beef, turkey, two ribs and a quarter chicken. All was served without sauce, with 3 sauces on the side. There was a sweet sauce, a mustard sauce, and a hot sauce. Nothing really special about any of them, but the hot sauce had heat but very little flavor. The chicken was a might dry and tough, but everything else was tender and juicy. They cook on a Southern Pride pit, but I could only taste just a little bit of smoke. I would go back, especially if there is as little to choose from here as has been said.

First went here in 1968 when I was attending school. The ribs are meaty and fall off the bone. The sauce is the best, tomato based with a peppery flavor. Every time I'm back in FLA it's a must stop. Cabin style, picnic tables, paper towels and the aroma, just don't mind the crowds (even at lunch). I think they opened in the early 50's, the place burnt down in the early 70's and they rebuilt. There is one in Davie Fl but the first one is still the best.

Big John's is not a place you would stop if you hadn't been told to go there. BUT...as soon as I got out of my car I inhaled the heavenly smell of the smoke from Blackjack Oak and saw the HUGE pile of wood out back. So far, so good! On good advice, I got the chopped pork sandwich, with beans, tater salad, and a piece of Sweet Potato Pie. The only thing that wasn't excellent was the potato salad. It was good, but I think was store bought. The meat was deliciously smoky with crunchy bits of bark mixed in. It was in a very tasty sauce, not sweet, with just a bit of bite to it. The beans were exceptional, smokey with a hint of maple syrup, I think. The sweet potato pie was some of the best I've ever had. Big John's is just a small place with a few tables, doing mostly carry out, and by the looks of the contents of their pit, which you can see as you order your meat at the counter, they do plenty of business. They have ribs (beef and pork), Chopped beef, chopped pork, chicken and sausage.

I was so impressed with the entire atmosphere of this place. Friendly, down right good people own this joint and the food ia amazing. Sweet or spicy sauce-both are full of flavor. They offer a buffet with not only BBQ chicken and shredded pork but some of the best collard greens and cornbread I have ever had. The meat just falls off the bone of their ribs and has a delicate smoky flavor. The chicken is moist and juicy. They also serve hamburgers and hot dogs and I hear a fantastic catfish dinner on Fridays. Two thumbs up to a small, down home fantastic BBq joint!

I found this spot a couple of years ago, when a buddy and I were antiquing in Homestead. At the time, the location was a tiny store front on Dixie Highway that had recently been a car stereo shop. The owner, a friendly 30 something guy, played christian radio while he cooked and served. He told us that his father had been "Big Jim" and that he was carrying on the tradition of smothered barbecue in his dad's honor. What an honor! That first day, we tried the entire menu. The sauce recipe was from Georgia, we were told, but we didn't detect the mustard based sauce that we've encountered in Georgia barbecue. This sauce is thick and sweet/spicy with enough of a bite to tickle the mouth with each bite. Son told us that his father had originally made a mustard sauce, years ago, but that it had evolved while he lived in Florida into the complex joyful liquid we were faced with now. The meat was the biggest surprise, it actually fell apart in our mouthes, we couldn't resist it's flavor and texture. The pork ribs were made out back, and he showed us his kitchen, this man worked with the bare minimum, and he worked magic. The big, battered sauce pot on the stove was full of the richest sauce, a liquid so precious, we were enthralled. We also had oxtails, which were incredible, smooth and spicy at the same time, in a flavorful sauce/gravy and smothered also were onions in the gravy that we ordered cornbread for. The cornbread was nothing special, we were told they were experimenting. And indeed they were. Over the past couple of years we have gone down to Big Jim's a number of timmes. His sauce and treatment of his meats is unique, and his cornbread has improved as well! He now makes a sweet and rich pan bread, instead of the packaged stuff he started us out on. And, guys, the vegetables here are worth eating, you can tell your wives you ate your vegetables and mean it! He makes collard greens that bear no resemblance to the brine soaked mess we recieve in many places. He has now moved his operations to a truck, where we can stop and eat in the sun, and he caters. A bit of Floridiana, and a hidden soulful treasure in this hurried and citified Southern state.

Tombo's isn't a big or fancy place; they don't need to be. People come from over a hundred miles away to eat there. They serve breakfast and lunch, and if you haven't tried their breakfast sandwich they call "The Rocket" you haven't lived. It's eggs, meat, onion, pepper and cheese with hot sauce in a pita, and it'll make your day. When they leave out the hot sauce they call it a "Scud", and it's still fantastic. Their chicken salad is something you have to try to believe-- you have to reserve it before 10 A.M. to get any, or they run out. Always fast, friendly, reasonable; you can't wait to go back!

Tom Jenkin's place first made me pull over to try it due to this intensely delicious smoky odor that was wafting over Rt. 1 just north of 17th St. I followed my nose to the best BBQ in the state. The pulled pork is my favorite. Very smoky, sauce with a significant kick tho could do better than regular hamburger buns. The ribs are meaty and moist tho chicken has been a little dry on a couple visits. Very good slaw, fair beans, very good collard greens, REAL homemade lemonade. Also, if you can fit anything else in there is peach cobbler on Fri and Sat only that is to die for. Unfortunately they're closed Sundays and every other day you're in for a long line. The space for eat-in is tiny but lots of folks do carry out.

Scruby's is a great find in a strip mall in the burbs. I would crawl there for the sides alone. The slaw and beans are both terrific (sweet, chunks of pork in the beans). My husband loves the fried okra. I love the pulled pork. The ribs are good but could be meatier. Medium smokiness. There are 4 types of sauces on the tables (hot, regular, sweet and mustardy) which invites experimenting (dab of this, dash of that). Very pleasant waitresses which is some kind of miracle since they are so busy and service is very fast tho there is often a wait for a table.

I like Mrs. Smokey's for lunch if we're out at the mega-mall. Mrs. Smokey used to run a couple joints in Manhattan (NY, that is) of all places and we ate there in the '80s when it was the only decent 'Q in the city. Well, apparently she ditched Mr. Smokey and relocated to the Sunshine State. She has the hottest damned sauce in America. They ask you "Mild, medium or hot?" when you order and insist you taste it first on a little spoon if you order hot. (DON'T do the hot unless you are brave or foolish as it hurts even more the next day as it exits.) The meat is VERY smoky and the overall effect even with the medium sauce is positively incendiary but I like that now and then. (Oooo, hurt me baby!) The sides are average and they serve tater tots for pete's sake which is just wierd (like high school). This is one place where I totally love the chicken (usually I'm a pulled pork woman) which gets this beautiful brownish-red shine to the skin in the smoker. You also get smoked sausages with your combo which is a nice touch. The atmosphere is wild-west and I find it cute tho it annoys my husband that they have old movies constantly playing on a large screen TV.

We heard our hotel clerk tell some German tourists looking for bbq about this place. Said , "food awsome!" He was right and as soon as we drove up to the the cabin like, casual type building with smoke eminating from the cooker and people lined up out of the door, we knew we would eat some of the best food of any type we have had anywhere! Absolutely fresh, juicy, and served hot! You can sit inside at the few picnic tables or takeout. We have since searched for bbq joints in our home state of California and nothing comes close. Even thought our trip to Dallas would get us something close. No way!! We will head right to Toms on our next vacation to Florida.

It's been a while since I ate at Bono's, and they're still the best. The meat was just right, and chunked rather than the thin sliced meat at Sonny's. Also, the mustard-based sauce is fantastic!!! I brought a gallon home to Maryland with me.

The cole slaw was great... just a hint of sour cream, and Lusianne fresh-brewed tea.

The restauraunt at I-10 and Lane Ave has the best atmosphere for a BBQ joint that I've seen yet.

My family ate at Bubbaloo's after reading a rave review in a travel book. Terrific pit BBQ in a strip-mall space with picnic tables and a side room with screens and no AC. Ribs were incredible one time, good the next. Chicken was very good, so was cornbread.

Having been for both lunch and dinner, I suggest dinner only. The overall quality was higher -- maybe the meat had been smoking longer.

I never pass by a pit that's smoking and on my way to a spanish restaurant in Tampa, I stopped at this BBQ / auto detailing joint. Clearly the Q was not an afterthought with the owner,Adrian Wright. He has dethroned my former BBQ favorite after 15 years at top spot!!The chopped pork is perfecctly smoked and moist( not soggy and with ample crisp outside pieces). So good it doesn't need a sauce but fortunately the 2 sauces(hot/mild) work to compliment the meat. They're not too sweet like many which work better as ice cream toppings. These two sauces perfectly blend a little sweet with a vinegar tang. Sides of collards, slaw, beans are good but the BBQ is sooooo special everything else seems irrelevent.I mean it!I've been to Tampa 2 times since and eaten Mr. Wright's Q twice more and it's held up to the high standards. I've never made it to the spanish restaurant-don't know if I ever will.

Although it is the only BBQ joint in Key West, it was probably some of the best q I have ever had. All of their meat is smoked and dry rubbed. I a whole order of ribs, and asked if I could have 1/2 of the baby backs and 1/2 of the St. Louis Spare ribs. The spare ribs were meaty and had a mild rub on them. The baby backs were spicy due to the sauce. Both were very generous portions, and I could not finish the whole rack. For sides, I got a baked bean mixture that was delicious and original as well as potato salad, which was also very good. They had 3 types of sauces, a sweet sauce, a hot sauce, and a mustard sauce. I thought all 3 were great. My wife had the Carolina pulled pork, which was juicy and flavorful. She though that the mustard sauce complimented the pork very well, as did I. The service was friendly and efficient, and I had what I needed the whole time. The restaurant was located in an older building, but was very appropriate to a BBQ place. I would absolutely go back and recommend it to my friends if they were going to Key West.
